Back in 2005 a unit of artillery men were deployed in support of operation Iraqi Freedom. That deployment lasted from May of 2005-September of 2006. As a unit made up of primarily younger gentleman ages 17-22, and some older more experienced NCO’s and officers, many challenges were faced throughout this time. We became a close-knit group;” unit cohesion" as they called it, and we leaned brother on brother for support. There were some great times, and some not-so-great times. The day finally came when our feet were finally back on the fresh green grass of American soil, and we breathed a heavy sigh of relief. Little did we know this was when the real fight was about to begin. We kept up for the most part with our “battles” and as the days dragged on, we withdrew more and more from each other and those around us. Unable or unwilling to let our brothers and the people that loved us see what we felt in our hearts and mind, we became recluses; shadows of who we were. Some 10-12 years later you think of a familiar name and decide to look them up on Facebook, just say a quick hey, realize they’re within a short drive from you. Feeling nostalgic, you might get together to just do anything. At some point you will open up and talk about the things that happened over there. At some point we all have. It has dawned on a few of us that while there is no cure for the stresses of these types of jobs, there is therapy. And no, a therapist is not some strange person with a notepad who tells you to lay down on a couch and talk about your earliest memories. Sometimes it's someone you’ve known all along and randomly say “hey remember when” and things just snowball from there.
Here at V&F Off-Road, our dedication is to fight back against the stereotypes and stigmas surrounding PTSD. Our goal is to provide that brotherly love that only people who were or are in our line of work are capable of. We want to be a shoulder to lean on, an ear to listen, and most importantly someone to help pick you up when you are down. Our aim is through outdoor activities, to bring veterans and first responders to things that may be slightly outside their comfort zones in the hopes that sharing stories and experiences can help to calm that storm that is in everyone’s minds. Through these activities we would like to engage the minds of the members and help to refocus some of those thoughts and fears. We have fellow organizations throughout the United States that offer services like this for vets and first responders alike. Don’t be afraid to reach out to us and let us know how we can help you or someone you know. You lay yourself in the line to ensure this country carries on, let us try to return the favor and help to deal with this stress. And as always, thank you to the men and women in uniform everywhere, for every service you provide. You truly are the pillars which hold this country high.
